Instruments clamped into a turbine, contra-angle or straight handpiece that remove material by rotation: diamond burs grind, carbide burs cut, polishers smooth. ISO 6360 governs their design and designation, which makes instruments from different manufacturers comparable.

FG with 1.6 millimetres fits the turbine, RA with 2.35 millimetres and a groove fits the contra-angle, HP with 2.35 millimetres fits the straight handpiece. Positions four to six of the ISO number show the shank: 314 for FG, 204 for RA, 104 for HP.
